One island, walked and scored

Lankawe is a Sri Lanka travelogue: hikes, overnight camps, beaches, villas and the towns between them, each one visited, photographed from the ground and the air, and rated the same way as the others.

The name

Lankawe

ලංකාවේ, lan·ka·way, is Sinhala for “of Lanka” or “in Lanka”. Read it in English and there is a we at the end: the island, and everyone on it.

What is here

Four collections, one map

Every entry has a page with the facts, a rating broken into its factors, the season it works in, and the photographs. Everything on the site is first-hand; nothing is listed that has not been walked, swum or slept in.

How we score

Three collections, three rulers

Each collection is rated on its own terms. A trail score means difficulty; a beach or villa score means how good it is. None of them are averaged across collections.

Camps and falls are flags

A camp is a night out on a trail or a beach, not a separate list. Anything flagged shows the pill wherever it is listed and gets a camp panel on its page: pitch, water, permit. Waterfall walks work the same way.

Two monsoons

The south-west monsoon runs May to September, the north-east October to January. Whichever coast is wet, the other is dry, so every entry carries the window it works in and the season planner lists what is at its best in any month.

The photographs

Every photograph and every clip on this site is mine, drone and ground, shot on the visit the page describes. Nothing is stock, nothing is licensed. The photo tools page holds the watermark and resize utility used to prepare them.
